Boston VR is the fifth largest VR Meetup group in the world, and an active collaborator with the Lab, providing their expertise, mentors, and lending library to our community of makers. The Meetup group also has co-hosted many events, workshops and hackathons with the Public VR Lab.
United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA)
Our 2017 VR Ecohack attracted the attention of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) who invited us to co-create immersive content telling the story of global air pollution with a 3D planet with particulate matter over a 35-year timeline mapped to each country and demo’d in person to over 800 world leaders at their general assembly in December of 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.
Arts2Work & Creative Economy
BIG & the Public VR Lab will be the New England regional location as one of the national partners for the first ever federally-registered National Apprenticeship program in media arts and creative technologies, a revolutionary blueprint for the future of work, and a new model for next generation creative economy job training.
Hubweek is a greater Boston-area festival where art, tech, science and community converge each October. In 2017 and in 2018, BIG and the Public VR Lab were honored to be included as featured artists at Hubweek where we shared our immersive storytelling projects in collaboration with the STAT news team at the Boston Globe and a preview pilot of our Arrival VR immigration storytelling project and its participatory mobile studio that collected migration/immigration stories from residents.
MIT OPen Doc Lab
Our founder, Kathy Bisbee, is a fellow in Comparative Media Studies at the Open Doc Lab at MIT, where she is building a field for Community XR, developing a national database of organizations providing community-based trainings, equipment and support for emerging media practitioners.
Brookline Community Foundation
Thanks to the support of the Brookline Community Foundation, BIG and the Public VR Lab were able to gather immigration and migration stories from local residents to contribute to the rich history of the American diaspora for the Lab’s ArrivalVR immersive storytelling project.
